MR AND MISS PPASL CROWNED THROUGH CREATIVE CONDOM FASHION SHOW

In a bold and creative effort to raise awareness about Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRH&R) and promote safer sex practices. The Youth Action Movement Sierra Leone (YAMSL) organized a condom fashion show to commemorate International Condom Day 2025 with the theme ‘Just use it’.

The event, which took place at Zion Hall, 3 Wesley Street in Freetown, Western Urban District on the 15th of February 2025, was a fusion of fashion, education, and advocacy, proving that even the most sensitive SRH topics can be tackled with creativity and flair. The show featured a variety of stunning outfits, all made from both male and female condoms, highlighting the importance of safe sex uniquely and engagingly. Contestants, who were predominantly young people from YAMSL, showcased their creativity on the runway, demonstrating the versatility and utility of condoms beyond their traditional use.

The condom outfits were not just about style; each piece was designed to send a message. From elaborate gowns to quirky accessories, the designs reflected the creativity and resourcefulness of the youth involved. The crowd cheered as models strutted down the runway, sporting everything from rainbow-colored condom dresses to condom-based accessories, which reflected both the playful and serious nature of the campaign.

The goal of the event was not just to entertain, but a call to action for young people to take charge of their sexual and reproductive health, educate, and promote condom use.

Sierra Leone’s health statistics show an alarming increase in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), with a prevalence rate of 1.7% for HIV. There is also an increase in new HIV infections among young people, and the teenage pregnancy rate is at 21% (Demographic Health Survey 2019). It is crucial to engage youth in conversations about sexual health.

Health organizations/partners made statements on the importance and benefits of condom use and the provision of resources for further education. The event created a safe space for attendees (partners, community members, health experts, and students) to ask questions, seek guidance, and gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
